Geboren 1946. Ich bin in einem kleinen Bauerndorf südlich von Wien aufgewachsen. Nach Volks- und Hauptschule besuchte ich die Aufbaumittelschule. In den 1970er Jahren studierte ich Pädagogik, Soziologie und Psychologie, betreute haftentlassene Jugendliche im Rahmen der Bewährungshilfe und arbeitete als Erzieher in der Kinder- und Jugendpsychiatrie der Medizinischen Universität Wien.
Ende der 1970er Jahre wechselte ich in die Forschung. Zunächst war ich Mitarbeiter an einer Studie zur Verbreitung der Mikroelektronik in Österreich, einer Studie, die am Institut für Sozioökonomische Entwicklungsforschung der Österreichischen Akademie der Wissenschaften durchgeführt wurde. Anschließend führte ich als selbständiger Projektnehmer einige Studien zu Veränderungen der Qualifikationsanforderungen und der Organisation in Industrie und Verwaltung aufgrund technischer Automatisierungsprozesse durch.
1985 schloss ich mein Studium mit dem Doktorrat ab und wurde Universitätsassistent am Institut für Bildungsökonomie und Bildungssoziologie an der Universität in Klagenfurt. Ich arbeitete zu Fragen der Akademikerbeschäftigung in Österreich sowie der Ausbildung und Berufseinmündung von Absolventen der Lehrausbildung.
In meiner Habilitationsschrift beschäftigte ich mich mit Fragen der Macht in Organisationen und erhielt die Venia für Wirtschaftssoziologie. Meine Forschungsaktivitäten verlagerte ich auf die Gebiete Vergesellschaftung und Macht, Wissenschaftstheorie und soziale Genese von Sprache, Bewusstsein und Normen.
Von 2003 bis 2023 war ich Redakteur der Österreichischen Zeitschrift für Soziologie (ÖZS).
Seit 2012 bin ich im Ruhestand.
Born in 1946. Igrew up at a small farming village south of Vienna. After primary and lower secondary schools I attended an Aufbaumittelschule (an upper secondary school for pupils who have completed compulsory schooling). During the 1970s I studied pedagogics, sociology and psychology, I worked with young people released from prison as part of the probation service and looked after children at the department of Child and Adolescent Psychiatry at the Medical University of Vienna.
In the late 1970s I moved into research. Initially, I worked on a study into the spread of microelectronics in Austria, a study carried out at the Institute for Socio-Economic Development Research at the Austrian Academy of Sciences. Subsequently, as an independent research contractor, I conducted a number of studies into changes in skill requirements and organisational structures in industry and public administration resulting from technical automation processes.
In 1985 I completed my University studies and took up a position as an university assistant at the University of Klagenfurt. My research focused on the employment of university graduates in Austria, as well as on the training and transition to working life of apprenticeship graduates. In my postdoctoral thesis, I examined the role of power within organisations and was awarded the venia docendi in sociology of economics.
I subsequently broadened my research to explore the significance of power in society, philosophy of science and the social genesis of language, consciousness and norms.
From 2003 to 2023, I served as editor of the Austrian Journal of Sociology.
I have been retired since 2012.
